Set up my music - Check!
Set up the class guide - Check!
Greeted the class and started to relay to them how this evening's class was going to pan out - Check!
All participants present had cycled for me before. Nothing out of the ordina....
the door to the spinning hall opened and in walked a woman I had never seen before.
I greeted her and waited for her to take her place.
"Do you have a pulseband?"
-No, I've never done this before, she replied, sitting on the saddle that was way too low.
"ahh well ... " looking at the class guide on the projector screen, then to her and then back to the screen again as if to make sure it hadn't run away and I asked her:
"Have you given birth?"
-huh??
"well, this area here" pointing at the green and yellow of 80% of maximum heart rate, "that's like when you have 5 minutes between contractions, and you pant hard to keep the pain at bay!"
"... and here, this is what it's like when you call your husband at work and say "Honey, my waters have broke, you better get yourself home now!" I pointed in the middle of the blue area, 75%.
"This here and above" pointing at the red area of 90% plus, "The baby's coming, oops it's twins and no it's too late for an epidural! ... in other words, here it hurts!"
The poor soul must have wondered what she had stepped into. All credit to her, after we set up the bike for her she punched her way through the class and worked up a good sweat, but if it was from the exertion or from wondering why a middle aged man was explaining to her the different levels of pain caused during childbirth, I guess I'll never know.
The class waged war against their own desire to stop, they pitted their will against the body's natural want to give up when we're not threatened to continue.
And fought they did. Pedals turned, muscles pushed and pulled and exerted pressure ... hearts beated and breathing was loud and heavy .... and as the last song ripped into the stiffled air of tortured souls reaking havoc on their bones like a black hole sucking matter relentlessly into its bottomless pit... so they came out the other side ... in tact .. and looking somewhat fresher for the experience.
Well done gang!
see you again next week
